Draft-Day Ranking

A Career Opens First and Second Ilya goes first in the draft and Shane second, turning their existing competition into a professional comparison. Each is celebrated, but Shane feels the sting of not being first. A Public Pairing Photographers place them side by side, making their futures appear linked. Their rivalry gains an official platform before either has played an NHL game.

Rookie of the Year

A Narrow Victory The Award Goes to Shane After matching Ilya’s scoring total, Shane wins the Rookie of the Year award. The victory matters because their competition has become central to his sense of achievement. Searching the Room Shane looks for Ilya at the celebration, only to find that he has disappeared. The absence leaves the win less satisfying than Shane expects.

A Rooftop Encounter

Victory Meets Vulnerability A Meeting Above the Party Shane finds Ilya alone on a rooftop, smoking and grieving the season’s disappointments. Their conversation shifts from competitive taunts to an unexpected kiss. A Retreat to Safety Shane stops the encounter because the setting is too exposed and the relationship too dangerous. The award night intensifies their attraction while reasserting their need for secrecy.

Most Sportsmanlike

An Irony on Stage The League’s Joke The league pairs the rivals to present an award for sportsmanship. Their scripted exchange plays on the idea that they can barely tolerate each other. A Private Invitation A staged selfie and the touch of Ilya’s hand lead Shane to a backstage bathroom. Their public antagonism conceals an intimate encounter that carries years of unfinished desire.

Hunter’s Public Example

A Different Kind of Spotlight A Public Kiss Shane and Ilya watch Scott Hunter kiss his male partner after winning the Cup. The moment is a public challenge to the silence that has shaped their own lives. A Changed Possibility The image gives them hope that concealment need not define their future forever. Ilya immediately calls Shane and commits to visiting the cottage.
